1. Bliz bans gold buyers, my husband's an idiot. | 9/9/2005 10:23:14 AM PDT

My husband and I have disagreed on the ethics of the gold trade since day one. I believe it hurts the in-game economy and supports horrible sweatshops overseas, whereas he sees it as a wonderful resource! He's wanted to buy gold for a long time, and we've had a few arguments about it. I told him that gold buyers could be banned, as has been said by CMs many times over, but of course he just laughed it off. In the end, he agreed he would not buy any gold because of the way I felt about it.

I was a little suspicious when his account got shut down two days ago. He said he must have been banned for flying around on a bugged windrider, and said he'd appeal it, but he didn't seem to have the righteous indignation I'd expect from somebody who got "wrongfully" banned. I asked him point blank if he'd bought gold, and of course he denied it.

Well, imagine my surprise today when I look in his folder of "personal entertainment" files and find a copy of the order confirmation for 300 gold from a certain popular website.

So here's a warning to you all who think you can buy gold and get away with it: you might get caught too.

And John, when you read this (and I know you will, since I know you don't do any actual work), consider our marriage over. Your stuff will be on the front porch when you get home.

Moral of the story:

Make DAMN sure you delete any and all information pertaining to a lie you tell your spouse.

P.S. Get a locking program for any folders NOONE other than you should be accessing, or better yet, carry it on a locked USB stick you carry around with you. Can save you a WORLD of hurt when your boss/wife/children decide that your "personal entertainment" folder needs to be explored.

Well, she was obviously untrustworthy by checking into his files to begin with...at least that's how I'd validate it to a counselor in a few years.

I'm calling BS on the whole thing though. Finding out your hubby paid $50 (or whatever that would go for) and didn't tell you the truth isn't exactly the same thing as coming home and finding him snorting coke off a hooker's ass. Looks like somebody got bored and decided to get some forum publicity.

Yeah, I figured it was BS too........WoW isn't something fow which one usually breaks up a marriage. I'm just saying, if I DID decide to snort some coke of a hooker's ass, I sure wouldn't keep the pictures of it in my sock drawer...... ^^;;

I agree it was staged, but it was pretty funny.

People don't normally get banned for buying gold.

If that was the case then consider the following:

I am dueling Asmo, and he beats me using cheap tricks. I hate him for it so I go and buy him 300g from IGE.com. I tell them to deliver to Asmo.

To blizzard it looks like Asmo bought gold. In reality, I did.

That shit would happen so often if they banned people for buying gold.

Actually they don't "Deliver" gold to you. When you buy gold they tell you to sell some random item on the AH for a super-exorbitant amount, and they buy it from you.

To get someone banned for buying gold, you would have to convince them to start that auction.

But you are correct, this story is not real because blizzard has no way of telling that IGE or whoever didn't just want that item you sold really really bad, and that you didn't just accidentally mis-type the sell price.

I know of people that have bought gold personally.

They literally mailed it to them. I've also heard of a buddy of mine receiving 50g one time because the mailer wrote the wrong person in the mail. You can't be held responsible if the farmer was trying to send to Mirad but actually sent to Mirax, for example.

There was a huge post in the Wow General forums of some dude asking why there were Sacred Candles on his AH for 1072g all the time...

It just so happens after the AH's 15% fee, that total works out to almost exactly 1000g.

Through the deductive reasoning of some of the few smart people in WoW General, they found out this is what it was for.
