xxxxxxx@Tokyo:/$ sudo mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdb1
[sudo] password for xxxxxxx:
mke2fs 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)
mkfs.ext3: inode_size (128) * inodes_count (0) too big for a
filesystem with 0 blocks, specify higher inode_ratio (-i)
or lower inode count (-N).
Don't know, couldn't find anything worthwhile on google for that one.

Got it, I should be good to go.
I edited /etc/fstab and entered it in but some of the entries in there were delimited by commas and not by spaces like the man showed...oh well, I'll see if it worked when I reboot tomorrow.

the entries that are delimited by commas are the options field. so what's around options should be white space delimited.

Why are you rebooting?
umount it or just mount it to test.

I did, I'm talking about when the computer reboots to see if the drive is recognized at boot. That is what the fstab file does from what I've read.

it also determines how you mount.

dmesg will show you if it is seen as a drive.
umount -a will mount everything in the fstab file
just make a directory and mount it to there and see if it sees it.
