After trying to play tonight it has become apparent. There is no way I can raid if I never get below a 7k lat in our instances. So I talked to Mod and he brought up something about port 80?

Some Details: I am on a college T3 network with over 7k more people
My internet connection is fine, explorer runs great, I even have around 70kbs when dling music with limewire
Games on the other hand I cannot play, WoW, CS, DoD all of them suck ass because I either have choppy lag or completely freeze up, and even DC.

What is this port 80? Mod says it is the port that everything but games run on or something like that. perhaps maybe my college allows only a certain amount of bandwidth to play or something.

Can anyone perhaps come up with a way to fix this? I know we have alot of computer people on the site so maybe you can give me some of your thoughts. Anything would be appriciated. Would sure love to play instead of log on 10 times in a night to just lag out again.

So PLEASE fot the love of cheese, hit me up with an answer.

Mod is incorrect.

Port 80 is the common HTML port..

Meaning, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Communicator, etc. use it to transfer data for webpages(unsecure).

The nice thing is, that port 80 is almost always wide open on most educational networks.. So, with some applications, you can set them to run on port 80, effectively slipping past access controls.. Unfortunately, WoW doesn't have that option.

I can't remember which port WoW uses specifically, but I can basically guarantee you it's out of the range of 'system' ports, that is, a port greater than 1024.

I can pretty much guarantee that your network is the likely culprit in this situation.. This is something many students have seen in regards to Blizzard games.

Your best course of action would be to speak with the school IT department and determine if you can work something out with them.

Also, Limewire is the devil.. Your computer must be purged

An old friend of mine had this problem while playing EQ in college. He had to fight with the IT department to get them to fix it. They actually had whatever port he needed blocked or something, I'm not a network person so I'm not sure exactly. He spent a week or so trying to convince them that the problem was on their end and that they needed to fix it. If you have problems convincing them to fix it I'll see if I can get ahold of my friend and see what he had to do.

This is actually what I told him. So I am not incorrect. My college uses packet filtering software, so if it detects information on ports other than 80 it filters them out.
